"Phantom" goes on... and on...

"Phantom" to pass 20-year mark on Broadway

I went to see "Phantom" on Broadway when Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford were playing the leads (although when I went Sarah's understudy was playing her part as she was sick). "Phantom" was one of the first musicals I ever went to see. It is kind of amazing to think my daughter could go see it on Broadway also.

It is of note that "Phantom" has outlasted several other acclaimed and popular musicals. Les Mis, Rent (closing this summer), and others have not had the staying power of "Phantom". Its nice to see "Phantom" survive the disnyfication of Broadway.

Security + Privacy != 0

Analysis: Metcalfe's Law Real ID = more crime, less safety
"We have a saying in this business: 'Privacy and security are a zero-sum game.'" Thus spake security consultant Ed Giorgio in a widely-quoted New Yorker article on the US intelligence community's plans to vacuum up and sift through everything that flies across the wires. But Giorgio is wrong—catastrophically wrong.

When Adoption Goes Wrong

Most Americans who adopt children from other countries find joy. But others aren't prepared for the risks—and may find themselves overwhelmed.

Stories like this are becoming more and more common in the news.

Katie and Shrek...

My little jellybean has an obsession. That obsession is Shrek. And it is an obsession. She loves lots of things. She loves Legos and books and trains but she is obsessed with one thing... SHREK.
If we let her she would watch the Shrek movies 24/7. Slowly it is getting better. At first she would sit and stare at the movies glued to them. As soon as one finished she would start asking for the next with an anguished voice. At that time we limited her to one viewing of one Shrek movie a day but it was tough. She was constantly asking to "Watch Shrek! Watch Shrek!" We wound up loosening the reigns a bit and letting her watch them more often then once a day. Now, she plays and runs around only paying half attention to the TV screen. However, still the first thing she asks for in the morning it to "Watch Shrek!" Every morning when she wakes up it is the same.
It could be worse. It could be much much worse. For one thing, there are 3 Shrek movies. She likes all three so we get to rotate. Plus it is Shrek which I approve of more then most of the Disney movies and Shrek has better messages and subtext then the Disney princess movies (once you become a parent you start to think about the message your little girl is getting from the princess who wants nothing more then a prince to take care of her). Shrek also has a good soundtrack and a is still funny even on the 300th viewing. Still we are glad when she occasionally asks to see something else like Ratatouille or Monsters Inc or Cars (her next favorite movies).
One of the random things she has taken to saying at randoms times: Prince Charming is cute!
The funniest thing about the whole things was that Tonya and I can't escape Shrek. For my 30th birthday Tonya gave us two days in San Francisco. On the second day we went to see a movie (I am Legend, I liked it, she is still up in the air due to the intensity). In one of the scenes in the movie Will Smith watches part of Shrek and starts quoting the movie. We just looked at each other and sighed... No escape from the green ogre.
