South Dakota capitalizes on Bush's supreme court moves

S.D. Governor Signs Abortion Ban Into Law - Yahoo! News

Gov. Mike Rounds signed legislation Monday banning nearly all abortions in South Dakota, setting up a court fight aimed at challenging the 1973
U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

The bill would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless the procedure was necessary to save the woman's life. It would make no exception for cases of rape or incest.

Planned Parenthood, which operates the state's only abortion clinic, in Sioux Falls, has pledged to challenge the measure.

Rounds issued a written statement saying he expects the law will be tied up in court for years and will not take effect unless the U.S. Supreme Court upholds it.

It begins... sigh...

Sleeping most of the night!

Kathryn has hit a huge milestone. She now sleeps between 5 and 6 hours straight a night. The first night she did this was 1 night ago. She slept from 8pm to 3:30am... Then lastnight she slept from midnight to 6:30am! This is great for Tonya who normally wakes up to feed her or even if I wake, wakes to help feed her (she isn't nearly as heavy a sleeper as I am).

Channel 1, good for marketing but not much else...

LancasterOnline.com: Students Remember More Ads Than News

Schools that agree to show Channel One on 90 percent of school days receive free televisions and satellite dishes, a deal critics say turns students into a captive audience for advertisers. Nearly 8 million students see the program, according to Channel One's parent company, Primedia.

"The benefits of having Channel One in schools seem to have some real costs that should create an ethical dilemma for schools," said study co-author Erica Austin of Washington State University. The study appears Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

My first highschool was a prototype school for channel 1. It was kind of like MTV news light. In retrospect it reminds me of the Ben Stiller charecter's TV network in Reality Bites. I was dubious of it even then, since it required us to watch ads at school. My savvy english teacher pointed out that they could show it and require that teachers not teach through it but they couldn't make us WATCH it. So we didn't.

Walmart stocks the morning after pill

Wal-Mart to carry Plan B contraception - Mar. 3, 2006

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - In a major turnaround, Wal-Mart will begin stocking Plan B contraceptives -- commonly referred to as the "morning-after pill" -- at all of its pharmacies, the company said Friday.

"We expected more states to require us to sell emergency contraceptives in the months ahead," said Ron Chumiuk, vice president of Pharmacy for Wal-Mart, in a statement.

"Because of this, and the fact that this is an FDA-approved product, we feel it is difficult to justify being the country's only major pharmacy chain not selling it."

Wal-Mart pharmacies in Massachusetts were required to carry emergency contraception pills after the state's pharmacy board ruled in February in favor of three women who filed complaints against the retailer. (Full story)

The company said it will maintain its conscientious objection policy, which lets employees who don't feel comfortable dispensing a prescription to refer customers to another pharmacist or pharmacy.
