Tonya and I just got back from the concert at shore line. This was my second time seeing Alanis and my second time seeing the Bare Naked Ladies.
The opening act was not that great. It was a woman with a keyboard and a bass player. Her singing wasn't great. Her songs were pretty weird.
The Bare Naked Ladies went next. The had a great show. As always they were joking around and making stuff up. I was a little disappointed they only did one totally free form song in their set. They had a great energy level. They had some funny stories and talks. During their whole set they flashed up pictures of Alanis performing as one of the band members. The final song of their main set was an dance number that was just awesome. The other thing of note was the final song in the last encore was Bare Naked Ladies with Alanis Morissette. The set consisted mostly new songs. I hadn't even heard they had a new album but they still hit most of the huge favorits. They played Pinch Me, Brian Wilson, Old Apartment, $1,000,000.00, Call and Answer, Its All Been Done, and One Week.
Alanis Morissette was next. He style is very different. The Ladies perform a very dynamic live show. Lyrics change, stories come out, they always have at least one free flow ryme/rap. Alanis is very different. Her songs are instrumented differently live then in the studio but other then that they are pretty much the same as recorded versions. Now this isn't a critasism. Its just an illustration of how different the two styles are. Alanis played a great set with two good encores. She did a good job selecting songs that flowed well and had great transitions from one song to anouther. Alanis hit most of her big songs, You Ought To Know, One Hand In My Pocket, Hands Clean, Ironic, Eight Easy Steps, etc.
It was interesting that some people were there to see the bare naked ladies only. So much so that they left half way through Alanis' set. I personally had a blast. It was harder to keep my personal energy level up through the middle of Alanis' set but that may just be because of the set order and the difference in music type. All in all I hope they tour together again, it was a lot of fun to see then together. It is also great to have two headliners at a show. It feels like more value for your time and money.
My thoughts on The Bourne Supremacy... Quick summary: See it...
Tonya and I went to see the Bourne Supremacy this weekend with my father. All in all it was a good movie.
I was one of the smaller pool of people that saw both movies on opening weekend. The Bourne identity was much more of a surprise. The trailers told less of the story and the movie was much more suspenseful as Bourne learned who and what he was.
Supremacy was more of an action packed movie. It was also more of a look inside Bourne, rather then Bourne simply reacting to stimuli as in Identidy.
I don't want to give away too much but the best line in the movie:
"Who is he taking orders from now?"
"The scary version? Himself."
My final thought on this is about the special effects. In a time when everyone has moved to computer effects (ala the matrix where I felt it was appropriate since they were in fact inside a computer), it is great to see a movie where most of the effects seemed to be traditional stunts including the driving scenes. I never got the feeling that I was watching something that was done by some effects guy sitting down with his new copy of Renderman and Maya to produce some "amazing" eye candy.
After a year and a half of dealing with my leg, I have an appointment to get it X-rayed again next week. At this point it is probably going to be considered healed. My arm is a different appendage entirely.
This week I had a tumor cut out of my middle finger on my injured arm. Since my arm ortho is a hand and arm expert he didn't refer me to anyone and decided to do it himself. (I was happy to let him do it. He is a hand specialist so I trust him to use a scalpel on a finger more then most.) Before the procedure he asked me about my arm. I reported the return of pain in my wrist. He frowned and made note to follow up on it.
At my first follow up on the tumor he did. (Oh, the tumor was a benign fibroid and finger seems to be healing fine after removal.) He scrutinized my old X-rays and did a pool of ROM (Range Of Motion) tests for pain and instability. It turns out my ulna is now a little longer then it should be. This is coupled with damage to the ligament that holds the radius and ulna together at the wrist end. My options are limited to fix this.
The first step is to get a bone scan. This is a 2 hour process that will show how the bone and tissue in the region is doing. Then after that they schedule me for surgery. It will start out as orthroscopy of the damaged ligament. Depending on the extent of the damage the finale will be different. The first option is to fix the ligament and shorten the ulna. This will mean removing the plate that is in the now and replacing it with a different one at the same time sectioning the bone so it will be shorter. The second option is to fuse the end of the radius and ulna together with a screw to form a pan for the wrist. I know, you all thinking that that means I will not be able to twist my arm. It doesn't, because they also take a section out of the ulna so there will be a gap between the shaft and the end. This means my ulna will be a "floating" bone in my arm. Most of the time this works great. Sometimes this leads to instability of the ulna. It also means my hand will only be connected to my elbow by one bone.
Right now the only thing I know is that my finger didn't have cancer and that I'm going to have more major surgery on my arm/wrist since the pain is getting rather severe.
So moving went fairly smoothly thanks to the many who helped. Only one major fatality (that I know of) ....a bookshelf that might not be able to be fixed. The new house is great......but there are some problems....blinds that fell off the wall, old electric wiring, gas leak in the oven ect....
Zoe has really taken to the house. She did a lot better with this move than the last. I think it's because we moved her first so she had a couple days to get used to the house before we moved everything in. That and she doesn't have any new people to get used to.
In other news......Will and I are going to the Sarah McLachlan concert this Friday in San Jose. I've been wanting to go to one of her concerts since I was 15 but kept having problems getting to it. We also have tickets to the Alanis Morissette and Barenaked Ladies concert at the end of the month.
In wedding planning news, we do have a date (5/30/05, Memorial Day), time, place, photographer, caterer, and I think thats it for now. Some type of wedding info website will be coming in the future.
