You children are ugly and stupid

Verisimilitude: Sometimes The Truth Hurts
I don't find your kids or their behavior particularly cute. In fact, I think your kids are hideously ugly. Your children are whining, crying, rude, nasty, deformed looking little brats that smell like shit and are in serious need of a good, sound beating. I would brutally murder your children and tack their dried skins on my wall as a trophy if I could get away with it. Trust me.

Do you really want someone like me bringing your kids chocolate milk? No?

Then leave them at home.

Take a giant leap back for victims rights

Globe to name and picture Kobe's accuser...
Globe co-editors Jim Lynch and Candace Trunzo yesterday cited - among their reasons for naming the woman - several feminists who advocate publicly naming rape accusers, just as the accused are named.

They also noted that the judge who ordered the case sent to trial has characterized the prosecution's case as weak.

"The girl has made an enormous amount of allegations, and we felt it was time to let the public know exactly who she was," Trunzo said.

This is outragous. This is a disgusting bid to raise readership.

SCO vs IBM -- analysis

GROKLAW

Groklaw is a site by a paralegal that analyzes and comments on different legal documents in the IBM SCO bout.

They are definatly in the IBM camp. I'm in that camp also so I like the site. However, the site is generally accurate and well written.

It kind of suprises me that SCO thinks this law suite is a good idea. The keep saying one thing to the public yet completely different things in court.

Unintended consequences

I was playing around with Amazon's new search inside feature and came across some interesting side-effects of the new search algorithm. For example, the top three search results for "Arnold sucks":

1. Ten Things I Wish I'd Known Before I Went Out into the Real World
by Maria Shriver (Author) (Hardcover)
2. Crime Fiction II : A Comprehensive Bibliography, 1749-1990
by Allen J. Hubin
3. ARNOLD : THE EDUCATION OF A BODYBUILDER
by Arnold Schwarzenegger
Man, those must be some harsh lessons Maria Shriver is dealing out.

You can't play the "suck" game with everything, but there's still enough fodder to have a little bit of fun. For example:

"Microsoft sucks":
1. Word 2002 For Dummies
2. Microsoft Access 2002 for Dummies
3. PowerPoint 2002 For Dummies
Any other gems out there?

Bruce on technology that should die

E-Commerce News: 10 Technologies That Deserve to Die

The DVD was the most eagerly adopted electronic consumer gizmo in history, but I'd feel bad if I failed to complain about the evil of these things. First and worst, DVDs are unbearably frail. Any benefit one gets from "clearer pictures" -- on what HDTV superscreen, exactly? -- is quickly removed by the catastrophic effects of a single thumbprint or scratch.
Plus, just like CDs, DVDs as physical objects will prove to warp and delaminate. Most loathsome of all is the fiendish spam hard-burned into DVDs, which forces one to suffer through the commercials gratefully evaded by videotape fast-forwards. The Content Scrambling System copy protection scheme doesn't work, and the payoff for pirating DVDs is massive, because unlike tapes, digital data don't degrade with reproduction.
So DVDs have the downside of piracy and organized crime, without the upside of free, simple distribution. Someday they will stand starkly revealed for what they really are: collateral damage to consumers in the entertainment industry's miserable, endless war of attrition with digital media.

The famous author Bruce Sterling weighs in on technology that should die...
His list:

  1. DVDs
  2. Lie Detectors
  3. Cosmetic Implants
  4. Prisons
  5. Manned Spaceflight
  6. Land Minds
  7. Incandescent Light Bulbs
  8. The Internal-Combustion Engine
  9. Coal-Based Power
  10. Nuclear Power

Iraqi Children Depict "Operation Iraqi Freedom"

I got this from my friend John. I was expecting so see primarily images of destruction at the hands of the evil whities, but it was a mixed bunch of stuff. Which made the sad ones that much sadder. Here are two that were side by side, a particularly poignant juxtaposition, I thought:

Supplied with pens, crayons, pencils and paper from New York City, we watched amazed as these very young survivors brought their experience of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" to life. When asked to provide written accounts of their beliefs, they refused - fearing the implications should Saddam Hussein return to power. The depth of these Iraqi children's reaction to America's war is measured by these powerful and compelling images.

It is amazing how children grasp reality. I personally disagree with the war in Iraq. However, I'm not sorry to see Sadam gone especially is school children age 12 and younger are afraid to write down their thoughts.

Some of the images at the site are either inspired by Zietgiest or were inspired by each other.

Since meta posted her juxtaposition here is my triad:

But, the monument will be no memorial. Phelps says the monument would be 5 to 6 feet tall and made of marble or granite. It would bear a bronze plaque bearing the image of Shepard and have an inscription reading "MATTHEW SHEPARD, Entered Hell October 12, 1998, in Defiance of God's Warning: 'Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is abomination.' Rather than face the mind-numbing paradox of both teams having to lose in the World Series if they faced each other, the Cubs gracefully bowed out of this series by blowing a 3-1 series lead. It remains to be seen whether the Sox, now having forced Game 7, will follow the Cubs gracious lead and bow out as well. No one wants to watch a Marlins World Series anyways.

On a side note, apparently Michael Bolton sang the national anthem to open the game, but after he got to "and the ramparts we watched," he forgot the lyrics, and the grandstand had to sing him through. I'm hoping video of this pops up somewhere.

iTunes for Windows?

Looks like Apple will finally announce it's iTunes for Windows software on the 16th. I'm mostly excited because MusicMatch doesn't fully take advantage of the iPod's capabilities, nor does it hide it bugs as well as the Mac iTunes does. MusicMatch does have a many great features lacking in iTunes (e.g. super-tagging for IDv3 tags, which the iPod greatly depends on), but it has a preposterously slow interface.

As for the music store, I personally am not all that excited by buying DRM'd 128kbps music as I prefer live music, which sounds terrible at 128kbps, AAC or no. However, it's nice to have Apple move into the Windows online music space to raise the bar a bit, especially over sites like BuyMusic. BuyMusic is absurd enough to have non-uniform rights for the songs that you download, so each song you download may have drastically different burn/transfer rights (yes it's probably a matter of the record companies causing this situation, but tough for BuyMusic). I have 2400+ songs on my iPod. Imagine having to keep track of 2400 different "content usage rules." Given BuyMusic propensity to copy everything Apple does (right down to the font), lets hope this is one more thing they learn to copy.

Countdown to the Apocalpyse: Update

Red Sox trail the Yankees 1-2 in the ALCS
Cubs lead with the Marlins 3-1 in the NLCS

The Cubs win but the Sox lose, so it's looking more and more like the Apocalypse will be averted. The Cubs will most likely face the Yankees, which isn't nearly an interesting enough matchup to be called an Apocalypse.

The Sox blew up in familiar style. To recap:
- Pedro gives up a couple of runs so he skips a pitch of Karim Garcia's back
- Garcia tries to take out Walker while running the basepath
- Pedro points into the Yankees dugout and gestures towards his head, most likely saying something like "I'll hit you in the head"
- Manny gets mad at a Clemens pitch he shouldn't have resulting in the benches clearing
- While both benches were cleared Don Zimmer lunged at Pedro and got his 72-year-old butt thrown to the ground. Zimmer spends the rest of the game in the dugout with a bandaid on the bridge of his nose and a sprained hip.
- Jeff Nelson gets mad at a Red Sox groundskeeper who cheered a little too much while in the Yankees bullpen and pounds him into the ground with the help of Garcia (exactly what happened is still in dispute). Garcia has to leave the game with a cut hand.
- and all of this happened with out the notorious Clemens doing anything but pitching well

I thought that I had been to the most notorious Red Sox/Yankees ALCS game (Game 4 of the 1999 series, where the game was delayed when fans began pelting the Yankees bullpen with batteries and throwing cups onto the field). I think the Red Sox have outdone themselves.

Urban Tribes

USATODAY.com - 'Urban tribes' build bonds

Tribes vary greatly, Watters says. Many are intricate, tightly knit, mixed-sex groups of singles, who support each other emotionally, exchange favors and sometimes take trips together. Some have gay members. Some tribes have a half-dozen members, and others balloon up to about 25. Some eventually marry and bring new blood into the tribe, as have several members of the Capitol Hill group.

Tribes are often formed by a core group who work together or went to the same college, who then bring in other members, Watters says. Many have an enviable sense of freedom, seemingly endless time to make and then correct life choices, including jobs and partners.

complementary currencies

Interview with Bernard Lietaer -- Money, Community & Social Change

1) Someone else also has a Pho mailing list. We are so unoriginal.
2) This will make you feel better about Japan after that horrifying groping article.

For example, there are about 300 or 400 private currency systems in
Japan to pay for any care for the elderly that isn't covered by the
national health insurance. They are called "fureai kippu" (caring
relationship tickets). Here's how they work: let's say that on my
street lives an elderly gentleman who is handicapped and cannot go
shopping for himself. I do the shopping for him. I help him with food
preparation. I help him with the ritual bath, which is very important
in Japan. For this help, I get credits. I put those credits in a
savings account, and when I'm sick, I can have other people provide
such services for me. Or I can electronically send my credits to my
mother, who lives on the other side of the country, and somebody
takes care of her.

Here is an agreement within a community to use as medium of payment
something other than national currencies, to solve a social problem.
And it makes it possible for hundreds of thousands of people to stay
in their homes much longer than they otherwise could. Otherwise,
you'd have to put most of these people into a home for seniors, which
costs an arm and a leg to society, and they're unhappy there. So
nobody's winning. In contrast, Japan has created a currency for
elderly care.

This man is thinking very originally about the nature of money, and how you can tweak currency systems to benefit communities. This makes him liable to be labeled as a crackpot at first glance. However, this guy is eminently qualified: he co-designed and implemented the convergence mechanism to the Euro, from the old currencies.

The bay area ain't cheep

Bay Area living costs up 14% / Family of 4 needs more than $70,000 to just get by, study finds

A four-member household with only one parent working needs $48,344 a year, also 14 percent more than in 2001, according to the study. The cost is cheaper than for a family with two working parents because one parent can take care of the children and doesn't have to pay as much for transportation.

A single parent with two children: $61,986, up 15 percent from two years earlier.

And a single adult: $27,781, a 14 percent increase from 2001.

Parent just don't understand

I have friends who have shitty parents. Either they don't love them or they are conditional in their love or they are controlling or neglectfull. We all know people in that situation. Being a parent is tough, to do it well it means becoming second to the needs of anouther and people aren't all the good at doing that. Recently, I've come accross a shocking group of incidents or abuse or neglect. What really scares me is many of these parents are around my age, and that makes it a little more personal some how.

The first story is about a woman (21) kiling her son (6mo.) and then prepairing to kill her self. It seems she didn't get past the note for the suicide but she did kill her kid.

The second is a step-father (36) and mother (46) that locked her daughter in a basement and tortured her with electrodes and cigerettes. The daughter was aparently coming to visit or something from California and landed in the situation. I really must suspect that they planned on killing the daughter, since you can't send her back to anyone after that kind of torture.

A trio of young adults (22, 19, 17) held a girl (18) overnight and tortured her. They beat her and subjected her to degrading treatment along with confining her in a wardrobe.

A 12 or 14 (it depends on who you ask) Romanian Roma princess was forced to marry a 15 year old Roma prince. She was force to consumate the marriage and she will no longer be in school but will "apprentice" with her mother-in-law.

An amazing 3 year-old survived 3 weeks by eating dried pasta, ketchup, and mustard when her mother (22) abandoned her. She was found by her father (33) who was in the process of devorcing the mother.

A father (48) killed his 16 year-old daughter because she was becoming too western. The man first tried to blaim Al-Quada for the attack but later confessed to slitting her throat.

A 25 year-old father sodomized his 11 month old to death. The childs heart burst during the attack.

A man (29) killed the son (3) of his common law wife for wetting the bed.

A woman (32) is facing charges for thowing her 7 month old out of the window during a bath. She claims the infant jumped...

Parents of a 6 year-old kept her locked in a 4' x 3' cage in the garden. Reportedly the child is mentally handicapped and this was the families way of dealing with it.

Father , mother, and babysitter duct-taped a boy (9) to death. The babysitter and father were just convited in a trial while the mother plead guilty eariler.
