Man, and I've had my phone for less than a year

Cingular has bought AT&T Wireless. This probably isn't good, but I'm not sure. At least I got my phone from AT&T for $50 (Cingular wanted $250).

For Cingular customers, this (hopefully) means no more black hole for reception in Mountain View.

I think it's not a horrible thing. As long as there continues to be competition, and Cingular didn't over-pay for an underperformer... it should mean better quality of service, cheaper service, etc. The biggest problem is transition time, and that might be the annoying part. We'll see how it goes. As a Cingular customer, I'm happy - there are lots of places I got AT&T and not Cingular. Around here. Where you can't roam to AT&T because of your phone's programming. So, this is good. :)

...but I'm an AT&T customer darn it :), and it actually kinda worries me that you two Cingular people are excited about this. That doesn't speak highly of Cingular, though your main complaints are coverage, not customer service.

My main concern is actual cost of service, and I actually I doubt it prices will go down because of this. Cingular and AT&T were the main competitors in the GSM market. T-Mobile doesn't really count yet, so in the long term, I believe this will raise prices.
